Details

Claude LaForge did not play for the Detroit Red Wings in 1962-63, instead appearing in 50 AHL games with the Pittsburgh Hornets. Originally a prospect of the Montreal Canadiens, Claude played just five games with that club, all in 1957-58. He was traded to Detroit, along with Gene Achtymichuk and Bud MacPherson for cash.

Although just a 24 goal scorer in the NHL over his career, LaForge was perfect on penalty shot attempts. On December 8, 1963 in a 5-3 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs at Detroit Olympia, Claude opened the scoring at 15:47 of the first period. It was a penalty shot goal scored on Toronto goalie Don Simmons. It was his only shot on net in the game.

LaForge’s first NHL goal was scored on December 28, 1958 in a 5-3 win over the Boston Bruins. Claude scored Detroit’s final goal at 15:39 of the third period, assisted by Norm Ullman and Red Kelly. Ironically, this milestone goal was also scored on Don Simmons. The game also featured Alex Delvecchio and Nick Mickoski both scoring shorthanded goals for the Red Wings on the same Gordie Howe minor penalty.

Between 1957-58 and 1968-69, Claude LaForge played 193 regular season and five playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens, Detroit Red Wings and Philadelphia Flyers. All five of his post season games were played with the Flyers in 1967-68. Never a Stanley Cup champion, Claude won a WHL title in 1971-72 with the Denver Spurs.
