Details
After Terry Sawchuk left Boston during the 1956-57 NHL season, Don Simmons came in and put up great numbers. Over 26 regular season games, he posted a 2.42 goals against average with four shutouts. Sawchuk’s “retirement” led to the Bruins trading him back to the Detroit Red Wings in the off-season for John Bucyk.
Simmons played all ten games for Boston in the 1956-57 Stanley Cup playoffs. He added two more shutouts, one in the first round against the Red Wings and one in the final against the Canadiens. The 21 save 2-0 blank was Boston’s only win of the final series with Fleming Mackell scoring both goals.
1957-58 was another successful year for Don, leading the Bruins to the Stanley Cup final again. Unfortunately, it was again the Habs hoisting the trophy. In three of the games against the Canadiens, Simmons was bombarded with at least 44 shots.
Between 1956-57 and 1968-69, Don Simmons played 249 regular season and 24 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Rangers. He was backup to Johnny Bower for Toronto’s three year run at the Stanley Cup in the early 1960’s but only got on the ice for three games in 1961-62.
