Bernie Federko led the St. Louis Blues with 64 assists and 95 points in 1978-79. Many of helpers were on goals by team leader Brian Sutter who finished with 41. Bernie finished sixth in the NHL for assists, 23 behind leader Bryan Trottier. He was eighth in the race for the Art Ross Trophy, 39 points behind winner Trottier.

The Barclay Plager coached Blues lost 50 games in 78-79, but the pieces, like Federko and Sutter, were in place for some successful St. Louis teams to come. In fact, the Blues would improve to a .500 record in 1979-80 and reach the post season.

Three of Bernie’s 38 goals in 1979-80 came in a February 9, 1980 home games against the Buffalo Sabres at the Checkerdome. Federko had all three goals for the Blues in a 3-2 win. Danny Gare and Rick Martin had put Buffalo up 2-0 before Bernie brought the team back to victory with three consecutive goals on Sabres goalie Don Edwards.

Between 1976-77 and 1989-90, Bernie Federko played in 1,000 regular season and 91 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Blues and Detroit Red Wings. All but 73 of his games were played with St. Louis, moving to Detroit for his final campaign in the NHL. Federko was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2002.
