Details

Willi Plett was the Calder Trophy winner in 1976-77, putting up 33 goals in just 64 games as a rookie with the Atlanta Flames. Other players considered for the award that year include Don Murdoch, Roland Eriksson, Glen Sharpley and Mike Palmateer. Both his goal total and his 123 penalty minutes led the team.

Plett recorded his first career hat trick in the NHL on March 13, 1977 at Madison Square Garden against the New York Rangers. His second goal of the game turned out to be the game winner in a 5-3 Atlanta victory. Willi also dropped the gloves in the third period, taking on Dan Newman. All the Atlanta goals were scored on Rangers goalie Gilles Gratton.

He ended up with the Minnesota North Stars for the start of the 1982-83 NHL season after an off-season trade that sent Steve Christoff and Bill Nyrop to the Calgary Flames. In his first year with the Stars, Plett put up a decent 25 goals but his numbers began to dwindle from there. Despite playing through the 1987-88 season in the NHL, this 1983-84 O-Pee-Chee hockey card was the least to feature Willi during his playing career.

Between 1975-76 and 1987-88, Willi Plett played 834 regular season and 83 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Flames, North Stars and Boston Bruins. In between his time with the Stars and Bruins, he was picked up by the New York Rangers but never played for that club.
