This 1977-78 O-Pee-Chee Mike Palmateer rookie card contains an ERROR. It notes in the trivia snippet that Mike played for the Saginaw Gears in 1973-74. However, that season, Palmateer was still a junior with the Toronto Marlboros. He did appear in 20 games with the Gears but not until the 1974-75 IHL season.
Palmateer helped the Marlboros to an J. Ross Robertson Cup championship in 1972-73 with a win over Peterborough in the final. They then went on to the Memorial Cup tournament held at the Montreal Forum. The Marlies beat the Quebec Remparts 9-1 in the final to capture the championship. The third team that competed was the Medicine Hat Tigers, a team led by Tom Lysiak and Lanny McDonald.
In the 1976-77 season noted on the back of the card, Palmateer took over as the number one goalie in Toronto as a rookie. He was backed up by Wayne Thomas and Gord McRae. Over 50 games, Mike recorded a 3.21 goals against average with four shutouts.
Mike’s first NHL shutout was big time. On November 17, 1976, he turned away all 39 shots in a 1-0 victory over the Montreal Canadiens at Maple Leaf Gardens. The Habs were in their prime and were 14-3-3 at that point in the 1976-77 NHL season. The lone goal on Montreal goalie Ken Dryden was scored in the first period by Lanny McDonald, assisted by Darryl Sittler and Ian Turnbull.
His rookie season performance earned him a look for the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year. Palmateer finished fifth in voting. The award was ultimately won by Willi Plett of the Atlanta Flames.
Between 1976-77 and 1983-84, Mike Palmateer appeared in 356 regular season and 29 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Maple Leafs and Washington Capitals. He is tied for third all-time for assists by a goalie with eight during the 1980-81 campaign. Grant Fuhr of the Edmonton Oilers owns the record with the 14 assists he had in 1983-84.
