Details

Despite playing 25 NHL seasons, 1,756 regular season games and scoring 694 goals, 1981-82 was the only time that Mark Messier reached the 50 goal plateau. Of course, it was overshadowed by the 92 put up by Edmonton teammate Wayne Gretzky. His 50 goals put him in a three-way tie for eighth spot in the NHL with Bryan Trottier and Marcel Dionne.

Not quite a Gordie Howe Hat Trick, or perhaps a variation. On February 17, 1982, the Oilers hosted the Minnesota North Stars at Northlands Coliseum. Messier scored three goals on six shots directed at Don Beaupre. He also got into a first period dust-up with Gary Sargent. Edmonton came out on top 7-4 with Mark scoring what turned out to be the winning goal.

Messier’s journey is an interesting one. He did play seven games of major junior hockey, all in the 1977-78 WHL playoffs with the Portland Winter Hawks. However, he was basically drafted directly out of the WHA by the Oilers in the third round of the 1979 NHL Entry Draft. He played the 1978-79 season in the World Hockey Association, splitting time between Indianapolis Racers and Cincinnati Stingers. He began play with the Oilers after the franchise joined the NHL for the 1979-80 season.

Between 1979-80 and 2003-04, Mark Messier appeared in 1,756 regular season and 236 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Oilers, New York Rangers and Vancouver Canucks. He was a member of five Stanley Cup champions, four times with Edmonton and once with New York. Mark won the Hart Trophy twice and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007.
