Details

The Eddie Shore Award noted on the back of this 1977-78 O-Pee-Chee hockey card is a Boston Bruins team award that is for demonstrating exceptional hustle and determination throughout the season. This is not to be mistaken for the Eddie Shore Award that goes to the AHL’s best defenseman.

For 1977-78, Terry O’Reilly was about to embark on a career year. He scored 29 goals and assisted on 61 for 90 points, all career highs. In the playoffs, he added another five goals and ten assists for 15 points in 15 games. The Bruins reached the Stanley Cup final before falling to the Montreal Canadiens.

That season, he tied for sixth in the NHL for assists with Jacques Lemaire of the Habs. His point total placed him seventh in the race for the Art Ross Trophy, a single point behind Mike Bossy of the New York Islanders. O’Reilly was eighth in Hart Trophy voting, an honour that went to Guy Lafleur that year.

Terry O’Reilly would play 891 regular season and 108 playoff games in the National Hockey League between 1971-72 and 1984-85, all with the Boston Bruins. His jersey number 24 was retired by the Bruins in 2002.
