Details
Steve Durbano came with Ab DeMarco and J. Bob Kelly to the Pittsburgh Penguins from the St. Louis Blues in a January 16, 1974 trade for Greg Polis and Bryan Watson. What resulted was one of Durbano’s best offensive stretches with 18 points in 33 games with the Penguins to finish out the 1973-74 season.
Originally, Durbano was a first round pick, 13th overall, by the New York Rangers at the 1971 NHL Amateur Draft. He never played for the Rangers, spending the 1971-72 season in the CHL with the Omaha Knights before being traded to the Blues prior to the 1972-73 campaign. With Omaha, Steve led the league with 402 penalty minutes, 177 PIM more than runner-up Len Frig.
Durbano’s four assist game came in his rookie season. On February 3, 1973, he had four helpers for the Blues in a 6-1 home win over the California Golden Seals. He also had a pair of two assist games that year. We take a closer look at his unexpected offensive outburst in our article at Hockey History Hub.
In 1974-75 with Pittsburgh, Steve would play just a single game. On October 19, 1974 at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena against the Philadelphia Flyers, Durbano assisted on a second period goal by Ab DeMarco (also assisted by Vic Hadfield). He also had a ten minute misconduct in the first. However, after a check by Andre Dupont, Durbano suffered a fractured wrist and missed the rest of the season.
Between 1972-73 and 1978-79, Steve Durbano played 220 regular season and five playoff games in the National Hockey League with the St. Louis Blues, Pittsburgh Penguins, Kansas City Scouts and Colorado Rockies. He also appeared in 45 regular season and four playoff games in the WHA with the Birmingham Bulls in 1977-78.
