Sid has run into tough luck since he had his top year of 33 goals back in 1954-5 dropping down to 4 goals in 1955-56 and 17 in 1956-7. However, there has never been a more likeable and gentlemanly player on the Leaf team. Sid won the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy in 1951-2 and 1954-5 for the most sportsmanlike player. He led the Leafs in scoring in 1949-50, 1951-52, 1952-53, 1954-55 and he is one of five Leafs who has scored 30 goals in a season. Sid was born in Toronto and is 32 years old. He left the Leafs in November to become playing-coach with the Whitby Dunlops who are competing in the world ice hockey championship this year.

Sid Smith’s 33 goal season in 1954-55 ended a string of six straight seasons with 20 or more. His 33 was more than double that of any other player on the Toronto Maple Leafs that year and placed him fourth in the NHL, five behind co-leaders Maurice Richard and Bernie Geoffrion, both from the Montreal Canadiens.

At the 1958 Ice Hockey World Championships, held in Oslo, Norway, Canada, represented by the Whitby Dunlops, went undefeated capturing the gold medal. Along with Smith, other notable players on that team included Harry Sinden, Charlie Burns and Roy Edwards. Sid played the following year with the Dunlops, as well, before retiring as a player.

At the time this 1957-58 Parkhurst hockey card came out, the only players from the Toronto Maple Leafs to score 30 or more in a season were: Tod Sloan (37 in 1955-56), Gaye Stewart (37 in 1945-46), Lorne Carr (36 in 1943-44) and Charlie Conacher (36 in 1934-35, 32 in 1933-34, 34 in 1931-32, 31 in 1930-31). In 1950-51, both Sloan and Smith had 30 goal seasons with Tod scoring 31 and Sid scoring 30.

Between 1946-47 and 1957-58, Sid Smith played 601 regular season and 44 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The three-time Stanley Cup champion with the Leafs served as team captain for the 1955-56 season, replacing Ted Kennedy and replaced by Jim Thomson.
