The Leaf executives cannot see how Frank can miss becoming a star. They know that he has all the ability necessary to be one of the best but they are fearful that too much pressure will hurt his chances. Frank is only 19 being born in Schumacher, Ontario on January 10, 1938. He is 6’1″ and weighs 195 lbs. and shoots left. He plays his centre position like and expert, handling the puck well and skating with plenty of speed. He played with St. Michaels College teams from 1953 through to 1956 and won the Red Tilson Memorial Trophy for the most valuable player in Jr. A hockey in 1956-57. Frank intends to finish his education even though hockey is his work.

The three games noted on the back of this 1957-58 Parkhurst hockey card that Frank Mahovlich played with the Toronto Maple Leafs during the 1956-57 season came at the conclusion of his junior season with Toronto St. Michael’s. The one goal, obviously the first of his NHL career, was scored in the final game of the season for the Leafs.

On March 24, 1957, the Buds were visiting the much more powerful Red Wings at Detroit Olympia. The Wings won the match 4-1 with Frank scoring the only goal of the game for Toronto. In the first period, he popped one past Detroit goalie Glenn Hall with assists going to Tod Sloan and Marc Reaume.

For his rookie 1957-58 NHL season, Mahovlich was able to handle the pressure. He scored 20 goals for the Maple Leafs and edged out Bobby Hull of the Chicago Blackhawks for the Calder Trophy as the league’s top rookie. It was the first of 15 times he would reach the 20 goal plateau. Frank had ten campaigns with 30 or more goals and topped out with 49 in 1968-69 with the Detroit Red Wings.

Between 1956-57 and 1973-74, Frank Mahovlich appeared in 1,181 regular season and 137 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Maple Leafs, Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens. He also played 237 regular season and nine playoff games in the WHA between 1974-75 and 1977-78 with the Toronto Toros and Birmingham Bulls. Frank was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1981.
