Ron Stackhouse was the top goal scoring defenseman on the Peterborough TPT’s (Petes) in 1968-69. The team was coached by Roger Neilson and led offensively by Rick MacLeish. Peterborough finished third overall during the regular season and was swept by the number one seed Montreal Junior Canadiens in the semi-final.
The Oakland Seals selected Stackhouse in the second round of the 1969 NHL Amateur Draft. After a year in the minors, he became an NHL regular in 1970-71 with the California Golden Seals. It was with the Pittsburgh Penguins that he played the bulk of his NHL career.
During the 1974-75 season, Ron wrote his name in the NHL record books. In a March 8, 1975 home game against the Philadelphia Flyers, Stackhouse recorded six assists in a 8-2 win. This remains tied with six other players for the most assists in a game by a blue liner. At the time, it was the fourth time the feat had been accomplished behind Babe Pratt, Pat Stapleton and Bobby Orr.
1981-82 would be Stackhouse’s last season in the National Hockey League as a player. Between 1970-71 and 1981-82, Ron appeared in 889 regular season and 32 playoff games in the NHL with the Golden Seals, Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins. In 1975-76, he finished tenth in the league with 60 assists, 29 behind leader Bobby Clarke.
