Ron Stackhouse shared the Pittsburgh Penguins Most Valuable Player Award with Ron Schock in 1974-75. His 15 goals from the blue line that year were a career high. He would share the award again in 1978-79 with Orest Kindrachuk.
His best overall offensive season in the NHL came in 1975-76 with eleven goals and 60 assists for 71 points. Despite the numbers, he was not in the running for the Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenseman. The 60 assists placed him tenth overall in the NHL.
Stackhouse remains tied for the NHL record for most assists in a single game with six. He accomplished the feat on March 8, 1975 in a game against the Philadelphia Flyers. The Penguins won the game 8-2 with eight different players scoring a goal. The other five defensemen with six assist games include: Babe Pratt, Pat Stapleton, Bobby Orr, Paul Coffey and Gary Suter.
On April 3, 1976, Ron put 14 shots on Ron Low of the Washington Capitals. Despite the outburst, Stackhouse had no goals but assisted on two, one by Syl Apps while the other was the 50th goal of the season by Pierre Larouche. Low turned away 48 of 52 shots in a 5-4 Capitals win.
Between 1970-71 and 1981-82, Ron Stackhouse appeared in 889 regular season and 32 playoff games in the National Hockey League. He started his career with the California Golden Seals and also played with the Detroit Red Wings.
