Details

It’s true, Ron Ellis jumped right from junior to the NHL without a game in the minors. In 1964-65, Ellis played 62 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs, scoring an impressive 23 goals as a rookie. This performance placed him second in voting for the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year behind just Roger Crozier of the Detroit Red Wings.

Ellis went into the 1974-75 NHL season with 476 points. He easily surpassed the 500 point plateau with a season total of 61. Point number 500 came in dramatic form during a December 28, 1974 game against the New York Islanders. He went into the game three points shy of the milestone. Toronto won the game 3-1 and Ron had a goal and two assists. His 500th came in the form of an assist on a third period Norm Ullman goal on Billy Smith that was also assisted by Bill Flett.

Those 61 points in 1974-75 were a career high for Ellis. His 32 goals was the second of two times he would surpass 30 with his career high of 35 coming in the 1969-70 campaign. He finished his career with 640 points on 332 goals and 308 assists.

Between 1963-64 and 1980-81, Ron Ellis played 1,034 regular season and 70 playoff games, all with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was limited to just a single regular season game in 1963-64 while still a junior, thus missing out on a Stanley Cup championship that year. However, he was an important part of the Buds Cup win in 1966-67.
