Details

Bill Flett would retire 20 games into the 1979-80 NHL season and this would be his last hockey card. It was a return to the National Hockey League after jumping to the WHA midway through the 1976-77 season after starting the campaign with the Atlanta Flames.

The 105 goals over 195 games referred to on the back of the card were from his WHA days with the Oilers. This is a bit of an ERROR. Flett actually scored 103 for the Oilers over 195 regular season games, along with five more in 15 playoff games. He added five more goals to that total in 1979-80 with the NHL Oilers.

After several years in the minors, Bill got his start in the NHL with the 1967 expansion. He jumped onto the scene in 1967-68, scoring 26 goals for the Los Angeles Kings in his rookie season. This performance placed him fourth in the voting for the Calder Trophy behind winner Derek Sanderson, as well as Jacques Lemaire and Doug Favell.

Flett would surpass the 20 goal plateau in four NHL seasons. He topped out with 43 in 1972-73 as a member of the Philadelphia Flyers. That total placed him fifth in the NHL, 12 behind leader Phil Esposito. After winning a Stanley Cup championship with the Flyers in 1973-74, Flett would find himself with the Toronto Maple Leafs the following season.

Between 1967-68 and 1979-80, Bill Flett played in 689 regular season and 52 playoff games in the National Hockey League. Along with the Kings, Flyers, Maple Leafs and Oilers, Cowboy also played for the Atlanta Flames.
