Rod Gilbert’s 43 goals in 1971-72 would stand as a career high over his lengthy career. He would equal his point total of 97 again in 1974-75. His 54 assists in 1971-72 placed him sixth in the NHL, just two behind a tie for fourth between Fred Stanfield and teammate Vic Hadfield but a lengthy distance behind leader Bobby Orr and his 80 helpers.

The New York Rangers were propelled to the Stanley Cup final in part by Rod’s 15 points. He was third on the club behind Bobby Rousseau‘s 17 and Hadfield’s 16. The Blue Shirts took out a powerful Montreal Canadiens team in the quarter-final before sweeping the Chicago Blackhawks in the semis. Ultimately, they fell to the Boston Bruins in the final. The series went six games with Boston outscoring the Rangers just 18-16 in the set.

Between 1960-61 and 1977-78, Rod Gilbert played 1,065 regular season and 79 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the New York Rangers. Rod was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982, three years after the Rangers retired his jersey number 7.
