Details
Rod Gilbert’s 406 goals and 1,021 points remain today as the most in New York Rangers history. His 615 assists now rank second behind Brian Leetch and his 741. Leetch also has the edge in total games played with the Blue Shirts with 1,129 to Gilbert’s 1,065.
1975-76 was an interesting year for Rod. It was the third consecutive season scoring 36 goals. Included with the last of his seven NHL hat tricks, a four goal game against the Detroit Red Wings. There’s more details in the Facebook post below.
He also had a five point game in an 11-4 blowout of the Washington Capitals on February 18, 1976 at Madison Square Garden. He scored one goal on Ron Low while assisting on two goals by Steve Vickers and singles by Ron Greschner and Wayne Dillon. Playing on a line with Vickers and Dillon, the trio combined for 16 points in the game. However, it was Bill Fairbairn scoring the game winner, his only point in the match.
Between 1960-61 and 1977-78, Rod Gilbert played 1,065 regular season and 79 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the New York Rangers. The first player to have his jersey number retired by the Rangers, his number 7 was raised to the rafters in 1979. Gilbert was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982.
