After scoring 23 goals in 37 games for the Kitchener-Waterloo Beavers of the EPHL to start 1961-62, Dave Balon was brought up to the New York Rangers for the team’s final 30 regular season games. He contributed four goals and eleven assists but tied for the team lead in the playoffs.
The Rangers fell to the Toronto Maple Leafs in six games in the opening round of the 1962 Stanley Cup playoffs. Balon had five points over the six games, tying with teammates Earl Ingarfield and Rod Gilbert. In both New York wins, Dave had the game winning goal. Both were two point games for the young centre.
Balon’s first NHL goal came the year before, scored in his second of 13 games played for the Rangers in 1960-61. On October 8, 1960 at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, Dave scored at 6:58 of the second period on Johnny Bower, assisted by Brian Cullen and Andy Bathgate. The goal put the Rangers up 2-1 and New York would go on to a 5-2 road win.
Between 1959-60 and 1972-73, Dave Balon played 776 regular season and 78 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers, Montreal Canadiens, Minnesota North Stars and Vancouver Canucks. He was a two time Stanley Cup champion with the Habs. Balon topped the 30 goal plateau twice, putting up a career best 36 with the Rangers in 1970-71.
