Details

The 1978 NHL All-Star Game, played at the Aud in Buffalo, was the last of consecutive appearances by Rick Martin at the annual showcase. At 18:21 of the third period, Martin scored for the Wales Conference, assisted by Marcel Dionne and Terry O’Reilly, to tie the game at 2-2 and force overtime. 3:55 into the extra frame, fellow Sabre Gilbert Perreault won the game for the Wales, assisted by Steve Shutt and Borje Salming.

Unfortunately, 1980-81 would all but be the end of Martin’s NHL career. In a game against the Washington Capitals in November, a collision with goalie Mike Palmateer resulted in severe damage to his knee. After surgery, he was traded to the Los Angeles Kings but in that 1980-81 campaign he played just 24 games, 23 with Buffalo and one with L.A. He played just three games with the Kings the following season before retiring.

Between 1971-72 and 1981-82, the two time 52 goal scorer appeared in 685 regular season and 63 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Sabres and Kings. Martin’s jersey number 7 was retired by the Buffalo Sabres in 1995.
