Proved he had talent when he scored 71 goals in the OHA Junior A Series in 1970-71, a record which broke the previous one that had stood for 18 years. Was approaching the 20 goal mark in the NHL before Sabres first 30 games this season.

With the Montreal Junior Canadiens in 1970-71, Rick Martin scored 71 and assisted on 51 for 122 points. In goal scoring, he had just a one goal edge over Steve Shutt of the Toronto Marlboros for the league lead. In the race for the Eddie Powers Trophy, Martin was sixth, 21 points behind leader Marcel Dionne of the St. Catharines Black Hawks.

In his rookie NHL season, Rick scored 44 goals for Buffalo, the team that took him fifth overall at the 1971 NHL Amateur Draft. This total placed him sixth overall in the NHL, 22 goals behind leader Phil Esposito. In voting for the Calder Trophy, Martin was edged out by Ken Dryden of the Montreal Canadiens.

He would continue his goal scoring throughout the 1970’s. He twice topped the 50 goal plateau with 52 in each the 1973-74 and 1974-75 seasons. In five seasons, he surpassed the 40 goal mark. In total, he scored 384 goals in 685 regular season NHL games.

The four time NHL All-Star (twice First Team and twice Second Team) retired from the NHL after 1980-81, playing mostly for the Sabres, along with four games with the Los Angeles Kings at the end of his career.
