Details

In his rookie 1971-72 NHL season with the Detroit Red Wings, Marcel Dionne scored 28 goals and assisted on 49 for 77 points. As a rookie record, those numbers have long ago been smashed. The current record holder for rookie points is Teemu Selanne of the Winnipeg Jets with his 132 in 1992-93.

Despite the first year offensive outburst, Dionne was denied the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year. He did place third in voting with Ken Dryden of the Montreal Canadiens taking the honour and Rick Martin of the Buffalo Sabres, along with his 44 goals, finishing in second.

1973-74 would see Marcel’s numbers drop drastically from 40 to 24 goals and 90 to 78 points. However, in 1974-75, his last campaign with the Red Wings before being traded to the Los Angeles Kings, Dionne exploded for 47 goals and 121 points. It was certainly a sign of things to come.

Between 1971-72 and 1988-89, Marcel Dionne played 1,348 regular season and 49 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Red Wings, Kings and New York Rangers. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992.
