Hawks acquired Reg from Canadiens’ organization last year, and as a rookie in the NHL he quickly earned a reputation as toughie. Kills penalties adroitly, plays either defense or wing, and won high honors in Stanley Cup playoffs for key goal when Black Hawks were shorthanded.

Reggie Fleming came to the Chicago Blackhawks via a June 7, 1960 trade with the Montreal Canadiens. Going with him to the Windy City were Bob Courcy, Cecil Hoekstra and Ab McDonald while Lorne Ferguson and Terry Gray went in the other direction. After appearing in just three games with the Habs in 1959-60, the trade made Fleming an instant regular with the Blackhawks.
In Chicago’s seventh game of the 1960-61 season, Fleming set the precedent as a “Toughie”. In a October 19, 1960 game against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden, Reg got into not one but three fights. He had a second period dustup with Dean Prentice. However, it was at 4:40 of the third when he really made his mark.
At that 4:40 mark, Fleming was assessed two separate fighting majors for taking on both John Hanna and Eddie Shack. Along with the two fights, he was handed a minor for cross checking, a misconduct and game misconduct. On the night, he received 37 penalty minutes, a head start on the 145 he would accumulate on the campaign, placing him second in the NHL behind just teammate Pierre Pilote.
The shorthanded goal referred to on the back of this 1961-62 Topps hockey card occurred in game six of the Stanley Cup final. Chicago was up in the series 3-2 and were in Detroit to face the Red Wings at Detroit Olympia. Parker MacDonald had put the Wings up 1-0 on a first period goal assisted by Gordie Howe and Alex Delvecchio. With Wayne Hicks in the box for Chicago in the second, Fleming tied the game with a shortie on Detroit goalie Hank Bassen. The goal took the wind out of the Red Wings sails and Chicago followed up with four more goals to win the game 5-1 and the series in six.
Between 1959-60 and 1970-71, Reg Fleming played in 749 regular season and 50 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Canadiens, Blackhawks, Boston Bruins, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers and Buffalo Sabres. He spent two years in the WHA, 1972-73 and 1973-74, with the Chicago Cougars.
