Details
After just one season with the Boston Bruins, Ab McDonald was traded to the Detroit Red Wings on May 31, 1965 with Bob McCord and Ken Stephanson for Bob Dillabough, Ron Harris, Albert Langlois and Parker MacDonald. He still saw time in the minors in 1965-66 but did have slightly improved numbers with the Red Wings and helped the club reach the Stanley Cup final.
In the final series against the Montreal Canadiens, Ab’s original NHL team, McDonald had the game winner in game 2, a 5-2 win at the Montreal Forum that put the Wings up 2-0 in the series. Ab scored at 2:45 of the third on Gump Worsley, assisted by Bill Gadsby and Floyd Smith to put Detroit up 3-1 in the game.
He played just 12 games with the Red Wings in 1966-67, spending the rest of the season in the AHL with the Pittsburgh Hornets, helping that team to a Calder Cup title. His NHL career had a re-birth with the 1967 Expansion. He was the sixth player selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft.
He led the Penguins with 22 goals and his 43 points were second to team leader Andy Bathgate. McDonald assisted on the first ever goal in Penguins history, a Bathgate marker put past Rogie Vachon on October 11, 1967 in a 2-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens.
Between 1957-58 and 1971-72, Ab McDonald played 762 regular season and 84 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, Pittsburgh Penguins and St. Louis Blues. He won three Stanley Cup titles, two with Montreal and one with Chicago. Ab also appeared in 147 regular season and 18 playoff games in the WHA with the Winnipeg Jets between 1972-73 and 1973-74.
