Card Notes

Audio Version:

Ray has the distinction of becoming the first non-goaltender in NHL history to win both the Calder Trophy as Rookie of the Year and a berth on the First Team All-Star Team. He set mark for points by rookie defenseman.

Details

It took until 1992-93 before another non-goalie would win the Calder and be selected First Team All-Star. That player was Teemu Selanne of the Winnipeg Jets after his amazing 76 goal rookie campaign.

Ray Bourque’s 65 points in 1979-80 did not last long as an NHL record for rookie defensemen. Larry Murphy of the Los Angeles Kings set the current mark of 76 in the following season. Since, Gary Suter, Brian Leetch and Phil Housley have moved between Murphy and Bourque. Previous to Ray, the record was shared by Barry Beck and Reed Larson who both had 60 points in 1977-78.

Bourque’s selection as Calder Trophy was as close to unanimous as it gets with more twice the votes as second place Mike Foligno. Also in the running that year were Pete Peeters, Brian Propp and Paul Reinhart.

Between 1979-80 and 2000-01, Ray Bourque appeared in 1,612 regular season and 214 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins and Colorado Avalanche. The five time Norris Trophy winner is 13th all-time for NHL games played, just three behind 12th place Larry Murphy. Ray was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004.
