Details

There were 21 players drafted in the first round of the 1982 NHL Entry Draft. Of those 21, 19 came out of the Canadian Hockey League, one came out of the U.S. University system and just Phil Housley was drafted straight out of high school. Throughout that 1982 draft, there was a surprising number of players drafted out of U.S. high schools, mostly from Minnesota, but Housley was the only one to make it big.

Phil was part of a group of seven players in the 1982 first round to go on to play over 1,000 game in the National Hockey League. Of those, Scott Stevens and Dave Andreychuk would eventually join him in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

In 1982-83, Housley finished second in the voting for the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year with less than half the votes of winner Steve Larmer of the Chicago Blackhawks. Also in the running were Scott Stevens, Brian Bellows and Pelle Lindbergh. It would be the theme of his career, coming close but never winning any major awards.

With the Winnipeg Jets in 1991-92, Housley got as close as he would get to the Norris Trophy as top defenseman. Phil finished third in voting, just behind Ray Bourque but a insurmountable distance behind Brian Leetch of the Rangers.

Between 1982-83 and 2002-03, Phil Housley appeared in 1,495 regular season and 85 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Sabres, Jets, St. Louis Blues, Calgary Flames, New Jersey Devils, Washington Capitals, Chicago Blackhawks and Toronto Maple Leafs. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015.
