Details
Prior to the start of the 1970-71 season, Orland Kurtenbach had actually played parts of nine seasons in the National Hockey League. Albeit, only six of those saw him play more than 50 games.
In the inaugural 1970-71 NHL season for the Vancouver Canucks, it took all of 5:37 into their first ever game before Kurtenbach recorded the franchise’s first fighting major. In a 3-1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings at Pacific Coliseum, Orland went toe-to-toe with Dale Hoganson. Rosaire Paiement would be the next up, receiving five for fighting after a third period dust-up with Ross Lonsberry.
It wasn’t all rough stuff for Orland. He had four point games in two separate wins over the California Golden Seals. On December 12, 1970, he recorded his only NHL hat trick in a 5-2 home win over the Seals. Not only was it his only career hattie but it was also the first three goal game in Canucks history. His three goals were scored on California goalie Gary Smith and he also assisted on a Wayne Maki marker in the first period.
The following year, in a 6-1 win over the Penguins at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena on January 19, 1972, Kurtenbach recorded a different kind of hat trick. The Gordie Howe kind. Orland scored his 14th of the 1971-72 NHL season on Pittsburgh goalie Jim Rutherford, assisted on another Wayne Maki goal and had a third period fight for the Gordie Howe Hat Trick.
Kurtenbach played four years for the Canucks before calling it a career after the 1973-74 season. He served as team captain throughout those four years and was the first ever in franchise history. Orland was the first of seven players to be inducted into the Vancouver Canucks Ring Of Honour.
Between 1960-61 and 1973-74, Orland Kurtenbach played 639 regular season and 19 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers, Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs and Vancouver Canucks. Orland appeared in three games for the Maple Leafs during the 1966-67 playoffs to earn a spot on the Stanley Cup.
