Details

Darryl Sittler certainly did achieve superstar status in the National Hockey League. However, it didn’t come quickly. His first year was injury shortened and he had just 18 points in 49 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs. The following year, he had a modest 32 points over 74 games. By his third year, though, his numbers doubled and he was on his way to being the face of the franchise for the better part of a decade.

Sittler was the eighth overall pick at the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft. He and first overall pick Gilbert Perreault are the only two from that 1970 draft class to play over 1,000 games in the NHL. The third and fourth picks Reg Leach (934) and Rick MacLeish (846) did come close.

Darryl’s numbers with the London Knights in 1969-70 were impressive with his 90 points placing him sixth in the race for the Eddie Power Trophy. The award was taken by Marcel Dionne of the St. Catharines Blackhawks who put up 132 points. Sittler’s 99 points in the previous season placed him third in the league, one point behind Dionne and nine points behind league leader Rejean Houle of the Montreal Junior Canadiens.

Between 1970-71 and 1984-85, Sittler played 1,096 regular season and 96 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Maple Leafs, Philadelphia Flyers and Detroit Red Wings. He twice topped the 100 point plateau and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1989.
