Details
A 12th round pick by the Montreal Canadiens at the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft, Dave Lumley played just three games with the Habs in 1978-79 after four years with the University of New Hampshire and two years with the Nova Scotia Voyageurs in the AHL. In 1978-79 with the Voyageurs, Dave’s 80 points tied him for sixth in the league.
On June 13, 1979, Lumley was traded to the Edmonton Oilers with Dan Newman. With the Oilers, his NHL career truly began. In 1979-80, his first full season in the NHL, Dave scored 20 goals and totaled 58 points while playing the full 80 game schedule.
1981-82 turned out to be career year for Lumley, scoring 32 goals and assisting on 42 for 74 points. He recorded his first of two NHL hat tricks on December 19, 1981 in a 9-6 win over the Minnesota North Stars. He also had three assists, two on Wayne Gretzky goals and one on a Jari Kurri marker, for a six point game. His second goal held on as the game winner.
Also that year, Lumley scored on his only career penalty shot. In a 9-8 loss to the Nordiques at le Colisée on December 2, 1981, Dave put one past Dan Bouchard at 7:51 of the third period. In that game, Dale Hunter put up the hat trick for Quebec while the Stastny brothers combined for eleven points. Mark Messier had a three goal game for the Oilers in the loss.
Between 1978-79 and 1986-87, Dave Lumley played 437 regular season and 61 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Edmonton Oilers and Hartford Whalers. The two-time Stanley Cup champion was claimed off Whalers prior to the 1984-85 season. After 48 games, he was put on waivers again and the Oilers re-claimed him.
