Card Notes

Despite his lack of size, Marcel was one of the most impressive of all NHL players last season, especially in the second half as the Wings made a drive for the playoffs that fell just short. Marcel is a shifty center and was Detroit’s number one pick in the amateur draft of 1971.

Marcel led the OHA in scoring, 1969-70 and 1970-71.

Details

Marcel Dionne was the Eddie Powers Trophy winner in both the 1969-70 and 1970-71 OHA Junior A seasons. In fact, in all of his three campaigns with the St. Catharines Black Hawks, he topped the 100 point plateau. In 1969-70, he led the league with 132 points, eleven ahead of Gilbert Perreault of the Montreal Junior Canadiens. The following year, his 143 points put him six ahead of Dave Gardner from the Toronto Marlboros.

The second overall pick at the 1971 NHL Amateur Draft, he came behind just Guy Lafleur. Lafleur was taken by the Montreal Canadiens from the Quebec Remparts. Dionne’s 28 goals and 77 points in 1971-72 helped him to a third place finish in voting for the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year behind Ken Dryden and Rick Martin.

Dionne went on to play 1,348 regular season and 49 Stanley Cup playoff games in the National Hockey League between 1971-72 and 1988-89 with the Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings and New York Rangers. His 731 goals place him sixth in the NHL all-time. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992.
