Details
Larry Patey followed up his three shorthanded goal performance in 1979-80 with a league leading eight in 1980-81. More on that in the Facebook post below. His three shorties in 79-80 came against some powerful teams: Montreal Canadiens, New York Islanders and Los Angeles Kings.
Over his NHL career, 25 of Patey’s 153 regular season goals were scored while on the penalty kill. In the post season, he scored just one shorthanded marker over 40 games played. That goal came against the Chicago Blackhawks on April 19, 1982 at Chicago Stadium. He scored 27 seconds into the second period, just 13 seconds after Brian Sutter entered the box for tripping.
That goal brought the Blues even at 2-2. Unfortunately, St. Louis blew a 4-2 lead and lost the game 7-4. Patey had a two point game, assisting on a Mike Crombeen goal. Chicago was powered by a Denis Savard hat trick.
Originally a ninth round pick by the California Golden Seals at the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft, Larry Patey played 717 regular season and 40 playoff games in the National Hockey League between 1973-74 and 1984-85 with the Golden Seals, Blues and New York Rangers. A Selke Trophy candidate on occasion, the defensive forward reached the 20 goal plateau twice.
As for the hockey trivia snippet on the back of this 1980-81 O-Pee-Chee Larry Patey hockey card, Bernie Federko‘s former St. Louis record of 95 points in a single season now stands at 16th in franchise history. The current record of 131 was set by Brett Hull in 1990-91. Federko’s career best of 107 came with the Blues in 1983-84.
