Details
As the front of this 1978-79 O-Pee-Chee hockey card states, Jude Drouin was an unsigned free agent and would not play for the New York Islanders again after 1977-78. In fact, he missed the entire 1978-79 NHL season before returning to action with the Winnipeg Jets the following year.
Drouin’s numbers were down drastically in 1977-78, scoring just five goals in 56 games. The year prior, Jude scored a near-career high of 24 goals for the Islanders. His best season offensively came in 1972-73 when he scored 27 and assisted on 46 for 73 points in 78 games with the Minnesota North Stars.
Six of his 22 points in 1977-78 came in games against the St. Louis Blues. In a 7-2 win over the Blues on December 3, 1977 at the Checkerdome, Drouin scored his third of the season and assisted on goals by Clark Gillies and Bryan Trottier for a three point game. Trottier put up the Gordie Howe Hat Trick with a goal, assist and a fight with Len Frig just 20 seconds into the match.
Jude’s lone NHL hat trick came on January 6, 1976 in an 8-1 home win over the Kansas City Scouts. Drouin scored three, all on the power play, while putting six shots on K.C. goalie Bill McKenzie. He also had a single playoff overtime game winner the year before, scoring at 1:53 of the first extra period on Philadelphia goalie Bernie Parent to give the Islanders a 4-3 win.
Between 1968-69 and 1980-81, Jude Drouin played 666 regular season and 72 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens, Minnesota North Stars, New York Islanders and Winnipeg Jets. In 1970-71, he was a distant second behind Gilbert Perreault in voting for the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year.
