Details

In his eighth season in the National Hockey League, 1962-63 indeed was John Bucyk’s top offensive season, to that date. Bigger things were to come. In 1970-71, Bucyk scored 51 goals and assisted on 65 for 116 points.

In 1962-63, Johnny led the Bruins in goals with 27 and points with 66. His goal total ranked him ninth in the NHL, one ahead of Norm Ullman of the Detroit Red Wings and one behind Dave Keon of the Toronto Maple Leafs. He placed seventh in the race for the Art Ross Trophy, just one point behind Jean Beliveau of the Montreal Canadiens.

His production couldn’t help the Boston Bruins, however. Boston finished last in the six team league with just 14 wins and 45 points, 32 points behind the fourth and final playoff spot. The Bruins had tried to hand the head coaching job to Phil Watson but after 14 games, Milt Schmidt was back at the helm.

John Bucyk played 1,540 regular season and 124 playoff games in the National Hockey League between 1955-56 and 1977-78 with the Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins. He helped the Bruins to two Stanley Cup championships and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1981. His jersey number 9 was retired the year before by the Bruins.
