Card Notes

Beliveau might be called the Perfect Player. He can do everything well. Beginning his eighth season with Canadiens he has won the NHL scoring championship once, the Hart Trophy once and was selected to the First All-Star Team five times. He was named to the Second Team once and is tied for the record for most goals scored in a playoff series. He scored 12 in 10 games against Rangers and Detroit in 1955-56. A gentleman all the way and a great credit to hockey.

Details

In 1955-56, Jean Beliveau won his only Art Ross Trophy with 88 points on 47 goals and 41 assists. He had an eleven point edge over second place Gordie Howe of the Detroit Red Wings. That year, he also won his first of two Hart Trophies. He would be MVP again in 1963-64. Interestingly, Beliveau’s 143 penalty minutes in 1955-56 placed him third in the NHL behind Lou Fontinato and Ted Lindsay.

Jean’s 12 goals in the 55-56 playoffs tied him with teammate Maurice Richard who accomplished the feat in 1943-44. Those will forever remain as the only 12 goal playoff performances of the Original 6 era.

1960-61 would be his sixth and last time selected as a First Team All-Star. He would make Second Team three more times for a career total of four. Hockey’s ‘Gentleman’ was never awarded the Lady Byng Trophy. Beliveau was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972.
