Details

1977-78 was the final year in the NHL for Jim Neilson, and the Cleveland Barons for that matter. Neilson went out in style, putting up 23 points, the most he’d had since 1971-72 when he contributed 37 for the New York Rangers. His 68 games played were the most since 1974-75, his first year with the California Seals.

Offensively, Neilson topped out in 1968-69 when the blue liner scored ten goals and assisted on 34 for 44 points with the Rangers. He finished his NHL career with 368 points over 1,023 games.

Jim was a mainstay on the Rangers defense for over a decade but wound up on the opposite coast for 1974-75, playing for the lowly Golden Seals. He made the best of it and was co-captain of the Seals in 1975-76, sharing duties with Bob Stewart. The two would retain the role with the Barons over their two years in Cleveland. Neither of the two would be picked up by the Minnesota North Stars for the 1978-79 season after the two teams merged.

Between 1962-63 and 1977-78, Jim Neilson played in 1,023 regular season and 65 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Rangers, Seals and Barons. He would have one last year of major league hockey in 1978-79, appearing in 35 WHA games with the Edmonton Oilers.
