Details

1971-72 was a big year for Jean Ratelle. Despite playing just 63 games during the regular season, he scored 46 goals and assisted on 63 for 109 points. He became the first player in New York Rangers history to surpass the 100 point plateau (more details in the Facebook post below). He finished third in the race for the Art Ross Trophy behind winner Phil Esposito and runner-up Bobby Orr.

Jean would reach the 100 point mark just one more time during his NHL career. In 1975-76, he totaled 15 points in 13 games for the Rangers before a November 7, 1975 trade sent him to the Boston Bruins with Brad Park and Joe Zanussi for Phil Esposito and Carol Vadnais. In 67 games with the Bruins Ratelle contributed another 90 points to finish the year with 105. This tied him with Pete Mahovlich for sixth in the scoring race.

Between 1960-61 and 1980-81, Jean Ratelle played 1,281 regular season and 123 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Rangers and Bruins. The two time Lady Byng Trophy winner also took home the Bill Masterton Trophy in 1970-71 and the Lester B. Pearson Trophy (now Ted Lindsay Award) in 1971-72. Ratelle was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1985.
