Card Notes

Big Jean is a living legend in Quebec. He’s nearing the 500 goal mark and is the man that makes the Canadiens go. Twice MVP in regular season and once in playoffs. Huge bonus lured him out of amateur hockey.

Details

Jean Beliveau was the recipient of the Hart Trophy in 1955-56 and 1963-64. He was the first ever winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 19654-65. His other major individual award was the Art Ross Trophy in 1955-56. He was runner-up for the Hart Trophy four times.

Beliveau surpassed the 500 goal plateau in his final season in the NHL, 1970-71. He finished up with 507, a total that places him 45th all-time, five behind Gilbert Perreault and Peter Bondra. The 500th was scored on February 11, 1971 on Gilles Gilbert of the Minnesota North Stars.

That night at the Forum in Montreal, Le Gros Bill went into the game needing three goals to reach the milestone. He quickly got two out of the way, scoring on Gilbert 5:55 of the first then again at 8:36. At 6:42 of the second, he scored his third of the game and 500th of his NHL career, assisted by Phil Roberto and Frank Mahovlich. The goal made the score 3-1 for the Habs and held on as the game winner in the 6-2 victory.

That 1970-71 season was a great swan song after a disappointing campaign in 1969-70. Playing just 63 games in 69-70, Beliveau scored 19 and totaled 49 points. It also ended his streak of 16 straight seasons playing in the post season.

The highlight of that 1969-70 season for Jean was a four-point game against the Philadelphia Flyers at home on February 21, 1970. He assisted on goals by Yvan Cournoyer, Larry Mickey and Pete Mahovlich while putting one into the empty net to make the final score 5-3. Rogie Vachon was outstanding in net for the Habs, stopping 45 of 48 shots.

Between 1950-51 and 1970-71, Jean Beliveau played 1,125 regular season and 162 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Montreal Canadiens. The ten-time Stanley Cup champion was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972.
