Card Notes

Audio Version:

How many athletes in any sport retire for three seasons and then come back – and be as effective as at the height of a long career? Jacques did it. He holds the record for having his name inscribed on the Vezina Trophy the most times – seven, including six straight with Montreal Canadiens. Toronto hopes he can lead them back into the playoffs.

Details

To this day, no other goalie has his name on the Vezina Trophy seven times. There is an ERROR on the back of this 1970-71 O-Pee-Chee hockey card. Jacques Plante won the award in five consecutive seasons from 1955-56 to 1959-60, not six straight like the card suggests.

The Toronto Maple Leafs finished last in the Eastern Division in 1969-70 and did not qualify for the post season. The team’s 71 points would have placed them second in the West, behind just Plante’s St. Louis Blues.

With Jacques playing 40 games for the Leafs in 1970-71, the Buds moved up to the fourth and final playoff spot in the East but fell to the New York Rangers in six games in the opening round. In that series, Plante split time evenly with Bernie Parent. Over the regular season, he put up great numbers with a 1.88 goals against average and four shutouts.

Between 1952-53 and 1972-73, Jacques Plante appeared in 837 regular season and 112 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues, Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins. After missing the 1973-74 season, Jacques came back for a single campaign in the WHA with the Edmonton Oilers.
