Six-time winner of Vezina Trophy for Canadiens, Jacques was traded to New York last year and played well, though average suffered. Jacques pioneered face mask for pro goalies, as well as technique of intercepting puck behind nets. Nicknamed King Cobra in New York.

On June 4, 1963, Jacques Plante was traded from the Montreal Canadiens to the New York Rangers with Phil Goyette and Don Marshall for Dave Balon, Leon Rochefort, Len Ronson and Gump Worsley. His time in New York lasted two years, retiring after the 1964-65 NHL season. Plante would return to the NHL in 1968-69 with the St. Louis Blues.

Plante’s goals against average did indeed suffer with the Rangers. With Montreal, he led the NHL in GAA in six seasons, never going higher than 2.80. With New York, Jacques’ GAA rose to 3.39 in 1963-64 and 3.38 in 1964-65. After his return to the NHL with St. Louis, he again led the league twice.

Jacques started the 1964-65 season right, shutting out the Toronto Maple Leafs 1-0 on November 7, 1964 at Maple Leaf Gardens. Plante stopped all 27 shots put his way and Camille Henry scored the lone goal of the game.

In 1964-65, Plante faced 30 or more shots in 24 of his 33 games. In seven games, he took on more than 40 shots, winning just one, a 6-3 victory over the Maple Leafs. In that November 25, 1964 game at Madison Square Garden, Jacques made 44 saves in the win. New York was led offensively by Phil Goyette and Don Marshall with a pair of goals each.

Between 1952-53 and 1972-73, Jacques Plante played 837 regular season and 112 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues, Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins. He was a six-time Stanley Cup champion, seven-time Vezina Trophy winner and was awarded the Hart Trophy in 1961-62. Plante was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1978.
