Card Notes
Don came to Canadiens last year after winning the “rookie” award the previous season with Buffalo of the AHL. Former Montreal mentor Dick Irvin eyed Marshall as a possible replacement for departed Elmer Lach. A quick-thinking, fast-breaking pivotman who learns quickly, Don is fitting in NHL warfare like a veteran and should be a big help to Canadiens this season.
Details
This 1955-56 Parkhurst Don Marshall rookie card contains an ERROR on the front. Marshall, as mentioned more than once on the back of the card, is a centre and not a defenseman as stated on the front.
Don Marshall had a string of success in the minors after seeing his first NHL action in 1951-52, a single game with the Montreal Canadiens while still a junior. In 1952-53 with the Cincinnati Mohawks in the IHL, he was awarded the James Gatschene Trophy as the league’s most valuable player.
That year, Don led the Mohawks with 46 goals and 51 assists for 97 points. He was a main reason the team finished first overall in the six team league and captured the playoff championship, sweeping the Grand Rapids Rockets in the final. He finished second in overall scoring to Alexander Irving of the Milwaukee Chiefs.
The following year, Marshall won the Dudley Red Garrett Award as the AHL’s top rookie. In 70 games with the Buffalo Bisons, he scored 39 and assisted on 57 for 96 points, leading the team. He finished third in overall scoring, 23 points behind leader Red Sullivan of the Hershey Bears.
In 1954-55, Don started the year in the QHL, playing ten games with the Quebec Aces before being called up to the Habs for the remainder of the season. In the playoffs, he scored just a single goal over 12 games but that one goal was a big one.
In the opening round against the Boston Bruins, Montreal went into game four at Boston Garden up 2-1. After regulation time, the score was tied at 3-3. With Butch Bouchard in the box, Marshall scored shorthanded at 3:05 of the first overtime to give Montreal the win and a 3-1 stranglehold on the series. The goal was scored on Jim Henry and assisted by Dickie Moore.
Between 1951-52 and 1971-72, the five time Stanley Cup champion played 1,176 regular season and 94 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Maple Leafs. Six times, he scored 20 or more goals in a season.
