Card Notes

The lightest player in the NHL and also the most elusive, he is often called “Camille The Eel.” Last season, he broke into the 20 Goal Circle and won the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year. 7 of his goals won games for the Rangers. Camille has been playing hockey since he was a child. His father who was a great star in the Quebec Provincial League used to coach him.

Details

20 of Camille Henry’s 24 goals in 1953-54 were scored on the power play. That total led the NHL with a three goal edge over runner-up Maurice Richard and a five goal lead on third place Gordie Howe. Henry’s 24 total goals placed him sixth in the NHL, two behind fifth place Ted Lindsay and 13 behind leader Rocket Richard.

In his first NHL game, Camille scored a goal and added an assist for a two point night. On October 11, 1953, the New York Rangers paid a visit to Chicago Stadium to take on the Blackhawks. Henry scored that first NHL goal with just 14 seconds remaining in the game, putting one past Al Rollins, assisted by Paul Ronty and Ike Hildebrand.

Despite his success in 1953-54 capturing the Calder Trophy, Camille spent much of the next three years in the minors before returning to the Rangers as a regular. He would reach the 20 goal plateau eight times during his career, topping out with a career high 37 in 1962-63. That year, he finished second in the NHL, just a single goal behind leader Gordie Howe.

Between 1953-54 and 1969-70, Camille Henry played 727 regular season and 47 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers, Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues. Along with the Calder, Henry also won the Lady Byng Trophy in 1957-58. He is one of the few to win the Calder Trophy in the NHL and Calder Cup in the AHL (Providence Reds 1955-56).
