Guy is certainly “at home” at the Montreal Forum, having played all of his amateur hockey in and around Montreal. The Canadiens turned him pro with Houston in 1968 and within a year he made it to the NHL. Last season was his best ever, and Guy looks like a future All-Star candidate.

Guy Lapointe’s numbers increased again for the 1972-73 NHL season with 19 goals and 35 assists for 54 points, Montreal’s top scoring defenseman. He was runner-up to Bobby Orr in voting for the Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenseman. In the post season, he added 13 point in 17 games as the Canadiens captured the Stanley Cup championship.

In the series clinching game 6 of the Stanley Cup final against the Chicago Blackhawks, Lapointe assisted on Frank Mahovlich goal in the second period that put Montreal up 4-3. The Canadiens went on to a 6-4 victory powered by an Yvan Cournoyer three point game. Pit Martin had a hat trick for the Hawks in the loss.

From Montreal, Guy played junior with the Maissoneuve Braves and Verdun Maple Leafs before a season with the Montreal Junior Canadiens. After his journey to Texas to play for the Houston Apollos in 1968-69, his only other minor league experience was in the AHL with the Montreal Voyageurs the following season.

Between 1968-69 and 1983-84, Guy Lapointe played 894 regular season and 123 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens, St. Louis Blues and Boston Bruins. The six-time Stanley Cup champion was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1993.
