Card Notes

A “diamond in the rough,” Guy, who after two seasons of minor-pro experience made the transformation to the NHL and, from early-season play, should be a leading candidate for rookie-of-the-season award – fine pointman on the power-play with a sharp shot.

Details

Despite what the stats snippet on the back of this 1970-71 O-Pee-Chee hockey card says, Guy Lapointe had played games in the NHL. However, his time was limited to one game in 1968-69 and five in 1969-70. He did become a regular on the blue line for the Montreal Canadiens in 70-71.

As a rookie, Lapointe put up great offensive numbers for a defenseman. He scored 15 goals and assisted on 29 for 44 points. Unfortunately, he would get no consideration for the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year. He did get something bigger, though, his first of six Stanley Cup championships with the Habs.

In the 1970-71 playoff run, Lapointe was a big factor in Montreal’s success. He scored the game winner and assisted on the insurance goal by Pete Mahovlich in a game 5 semi-final win that put the Habs up 3-2 and broke the backs of the Minnesota North Stars. The Canadiens won game six to advance to the final. In that Stanley Cup final series against the Chicago Blackhawks, Lapointe assisted on Henri Richard‘s Cup clinching goal in game seven.

Between 1968-69 and 1983-84, Guy Lapointe played 894 regular season and 123 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Canadiens, St. Louis Blues and Boston Bruins. Lapointe was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1993.
