Card Notes

One of the most feared players in the NHL, especially on power plays. Yvan is a speed merchant and his shot is one of the hardest in the game. Led the Canadiens in scoring last season and is now an “untouchable”.

En Français

Un des joueurs les plus redoutés dans la LNH surtout au jeu de puissance. Yvan est très rapide et son lancer est un des plus puissants. Il a mené chez les Canadiens comme compteur et est solidement établi maintenant.

Details

The 43 goals Yvan Cournoyer scored for the Montreal Canadiens led the team and placed him sixth in the NHL, 15 behind leader Bobby Hull and one behind fifth place Gordie Howe. His 87 points also placed him sixth in the race for the Art Ross Trophy, 39 behind winner Phil Esposito.

It was the first of four times he would reach the 40 goal plateau over his NHL career. Yvan’s best was 47 in 1971-72. That year, he finished fourth, 19 behind leader Phil Esposito and one ahead of Jean Ratelle.

Included in his 1968-69 goal total were a pair of hat tricks. The first was on January 25, 1969 in a 6-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. That night, he scored three goals on his seven shots put toward Bernie Parent.

The second was on March 6, 1969 in a 5-3 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. The third of the game served as the game winner, scored at 4:12 of the third period to make the score 4-3. That goal was assisted by J.C. Tremblay and Dick Duff, scored on Toronto goalie Bruce Gamble.

Between 1963-64 and 1978-79, Yvan Cournoyer played 968 regular season and 147 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Montreal Canadiens. The native of Drummondville, Quebec was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982. His jersey number 12 was retired by the Habs in 2005, shared with Dickie Moore.
