Details

Gump Worsley would play just 12 games in 1972-73 and 29 more in 1973-74 with the Minnesota North Stars before calling it a career, both seasons backing up Cesare Maniago. His final shutouts came during the 1971-72 NHL season.

Fittingly, the long time New York Ranger goaltender got his final regular season shutout at Madison Square Garden against the Blue Shirts. On March 26, 1972, the North Stars handled the much stronger New York squad 5-0 with Worsley turning away all 29 shots. Future Ranger Bill Goldsworthy scored Minnesota’s first goal of the game and ended up the night with three points on a goal and two assists.

Worsley would get one last shutout on April 5, 1972 in the first game of the opening round of the playoffs against the St. Louis Blues. Gump made 27 stops, helping the North Stars to a 3-0 victory with Dean Prentice scoring the winner with assists to Charlie Burns and Murray Oliver. Minnesota would hold 2-0 and 3-2 leads in the series but eventually fell to the Blues in seven games.

Between 1952-53 and 1973-74, Gump Worsley appeared in 861 regular season and 70 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers, Montreal Canadiens and Minnesota North Stars. He was part of four Stanley Cup champions in Montreal and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1980.
