Card Notes

Yvan has been used as a utility forward the past 3 seasons with Montreal. His specialty has been on the famed Montreal power play. Last season his 25 goals were almost all scored while the opposition was a man short. This year Coach Toe Blake is giving Yvan a regular turn.

Details

The back of the card is no exaggeration. In 1966-67, 20 of Yvan Cournoyer’s 25 goals with the Montreal Canadiens were scored on the power play. Eight of his 15 assists also came with the man advantage.

That 20 PP goals was a career high for Yvan. However, he would continue to be a powerplay specialist throughout his NHL career. 152 of his 428 regular season goals in the National Hockey League came with the man advantage.

He certainly did get a regular turn in 1967-68. Despite playing five less games than in 1966-67, Yvan upped his goal total by three to 28. More importantly, he more than doubled his assist total to 32. He added 20 points over the year before to finish with 60.

His 25 goals in 1966-67 started a string of 12 consecutive seasons with 20 or more goals. He topped 30 goals on six occasions and crossed the 40 goal mark four times. His best season came in 1971-72 when he scored 47 goals for the Habs. That number placed him fourth in the NHL behind Phil Esposito, Bobby Hull and Vic Hadfield.

Cournoyer played 968 regular season and 147 playoff games in the NHL between 1963-64 and 1978-79, all with the Montreal Canadiens. The Roadrunner was a part of ten Stanley Cup championship teams and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982.
