Ronald’s his given name but he’s Chico to everybody. Chico moved up to regular status as right winger on line with Bobby Hull. He was AHL’s rookie of year with Buffalo in 1960-61.

Chico Maki was the winner of the Eddie Powers Trophy as a member of the St. Catharines Teepees in 1959-60. His 92 points gave him a single point edge over Rod Gilbert of the Guelph Biltmores. The year before, Maki’s 94 points were three points behind teammate and league leader Stan Mikita. He led the OHA Junior A with 41 goals.
In 1960-61, Chico won the Dudley Red Garrett Memorial Award as the American Hockey League’s top rookie. Playing for the Buffalo Bisons, Maki scored 30 goals and assisted on 42 for 72 points. He still had another split season between the AHL and NHL before becoming a true regular in the National Hockey League for the 1962-63 season.
Despite a NHL career that spanned well over a decade with the Blackhawks, Maki was not used for the offensive skills that he showed off in junior and minor pro. His top season for goals came in 1970-71 with 22, his only time reaching the 20 goal plateau. Twice during his career, he hit his career best of 48 points.
Between 1960-61 and 1975-76, Chico Maki played in 841 regular season and 113 playoff games in the NHL, all with Chicago. His first NHL game came during the 1960-61 Stanley Cup playoffs, appearing in a single game as the Blackhawks captured the championship. He would reach the final again with the team in 1964-65, 1970-71 and 1972-73.
