Card Notes
Few players have come into the NHL with as much advance publicity as Gil. But the big center has proven himself already with two outstanding seasons. Gil’s skating style and smooth precise passes remind fans of the great captain of the Montreal Canadiens, Jean Beliveau. Gil was MVP of the Ontario Hockey Association during his final junior season. Gil won Calder Trophy in 1970-71.

Details
With the arrival of his French Connection linemate Rick Martin, Gilbert Perreault switched from goal-scorer to set-up man in 1971-72. His goal totals dropped from 38 in his rookie season to 26 in his sophomore campaign. However, his point total increased due to his assist count jumping by 14 to 48. In 1972-73, he increased that helper number to 60 and finished fifth in the NHL for that category.
His most outstanding game of the 1972-73 NHL season came earlier against the expansion Atlanta Flames. Perreault totaled six points on two goals and four assists in a 7-2 home win on October 22, 1972. He assisted on three of Rick Martin’s four goals and also had a helper on a Rene Robert marker. Gilbert scored ten seconds into the second period to make the score 2-0 then scored 31 seconds into the third for what would be the game winner.
The 1972-73 Stanley Cup playoffs were Buffalo’s first visit to the post season and they gave the Montreal Canadiens, a team that finished the regular season with 120 points, a real fight in the opening round. Over the six game series, Perreault had ten points on three goals and seven assists. Buffalo fell 3-0 early in the series but Perreault powered the Sabres to two straight wins to keep them alive.
In game 4, he had two goals and an assist in a 5-1 home win with his first goal serving as the game winner. The French Connection line of Perreault, Rick Martin and Rene Robert combined for 24 of the 50 shots put toward Montreal goalie Ken Dryden in the game.
In game 5 at the Montreal Forum, Perreault assisted on goals by Martin and Robert in the second to give Buffalo a 2-1 edge. However, Guy Lapointe tied the game late in the third with help from Henri Richard and Pete Mahovlich. At 9:18 of the first overtime, Gil and the French Connection gave the Sabres the victory. Montreal would win the following two games, though, to take the series.
Between 1970-71 and 1986-87, Gilbert Perreault played 1,191 regular season and 90 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Buffalo Sabres. He finished his career with 512 goals and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1990.
