Card Notes

The Sabres hope results with Jim turn out as well as with their first-round amateur draft picks in each of the previous two years – Gilbert Perreault and Rick Martin. Schoenfeld is looked upon as the potential the Sabres can build strong defense around. Good rushing defenseman and a solid body-checker.

Details

Jim Schoenfeld didn’t disappoint in his first year of NHL hockey with the Buffalo Sabres. The young defenseman helped the team do a complete turnaround from the year before and qualify for the post season for the first time in franchise history. The Sabres fell to the Montreal Canadiens in the opening round with Jim scoring two goals in six games.

In 1972-73, Schoenfeld finished fourth in the voting for the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year behind Steve Vickers, Bill Barber and Billy Harris. He came to Buffalo as the fifth overall pick at the 1972 NHL Amateur Draft after playing major junior with the London Knights, Hamilton Red Wings and Niagara Falls Flyers.

Between 1972-73 and 1984-85, Jim Schoenfeld played 719 regular season and 75 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Sabres, Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins. He went on to an NHL head coaching career with the Sabres, New Jersey Devils, Washington Capitals and Phoenix Coyotes.
