Details

1978-79 was the first full season with the Detroit Red Wings for Errol Thompson. He came over from the Toronto Maple Leafs in a March 13, 1978 trade that sent Dan Maloney in the other direction.

Thompson responded with some decent scoring in Motown, putting up 23 goals in 1978-79 and 34 the year after. He surpassed the 20 goal plateau in seven seasons, topping out with 43 in 1975-76 with the Maple Leafs on a line with Darryl Sittler and Lanny McDonald.

Errol was team captain with the Wings in 1980-81 but played just 39 games with the club that year before being shipped to the Pittsburgh Penguins. In a January 8, 1981 trade, Thompson went to the Pens in exchange for Gary McAdam. Errol played 34 games for Pittsburgh before retiring. McAdam appeared in 40 games for the Red Wings and was with the Calgary Flames for 1981-82.

Between 1970-71 and 1980-81, the second round pick by Toronto at the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft appeared in 599 regular season and 34 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Maple Leafs, Red Wings and Penguins.
