Dan was Hawks’ first-round choice in the 1970 Amateur Draft and made the jump straight to the NHL from junior hockey (London of the OHA). In 1971-72, however, he was sent to Dallas of the Central League for more experience and it appeared to have paid off.

The last player taken in the first round of the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft (14th overall), Dan Maloney was coming off two strong years of junior hockey with the London Knights. It was a strong draft with the likes of Gilbert Perreault, Reg Leach, Rick MacLeish and Darryl Sittler going ahead of him.
In his rookie season with Chicago, 1970-71, Maloney finished sixth in the NHL with 174 penalty minutes, a distant 115 PIM behind leader and Blackhawks teammate Keith Magnuson. He followed that up with a strong 1971-72 season in the CHL with the Dallas Blackhawks. He tied for fifth in the league with 52 assists and finished eighth with 161 penalty minutes while helping Dallas to a playoff championship.
The year of seasoning in the minors did pay off with Maloney starting 1972-73 with 30 points in 57 games while reducing his time in the box to just 63 minutes. However, on February 23, 1973 his days in Chicago came to an end. Dan was shipped to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for Ralph Backstrom. It was a win for L.A. as Backstrom would play just 16 games (plus 16 more in the playoffs) with the Hawks before defecting to the World Hockey Association.
Between 1970-71 and 1981-82, Dan Maloney played in 737 regular season and 40 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Blackhawks, Kings, Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs. He was part of a major deal in June, 1975 that saw him and Terry Harper go to Detroit in exchange for Marcel Dionne and Bart Crashley.
