Details

A third round pick by the Buffalo Sabres at the 1975 NHL Amateur Draft after a junior career split between the Ottawa 67’s and St. Catharines Black Hawks, Gary McAdam split his first year of pro hockey, 1975-76, with the Sabres and Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League. With Hershey, he helped the team to the Calder Cup final before losing to the Nova Scotia Voyageurs.

It was in the AHL several years later where Gary would get his name in the record books. In 1982-83, playing for the Rochester Americans, eleven of his 40 goals were scored shorthanded. That total remains as a league record today. The 40 goals placed him tenth in the league. He helped the Mike Keenan coached Amerks win the Calder Cup title, taking out the Maine Mariners in the final.

That goal scoring ability never quite caught on in the NHL. McAdam topped out with a career best 19 markers. He did this twice, in 1977-78 with Buffalo and in 1979-80 with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He ended up in Pittsburgh via a February 6, 1979 trade for Dave Schultz.

Between 1975-76 and 1985-86, Gary McAdam appeared in 534 regular season and 30 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Sabres, Penguins, Detroit Red Wings, Calgary Flames, Washington Capitals, New Jersey Devils and Toronto Maple Leafs.
